ResCon 2017 Cave Rescue Conference Information

Greetings!

The organisers of the South and Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team very much look forward to welcoming you to SWCC Penwyllt for the BCRC ResCon 2017 Cave Rescue Conference this weekend. Attached you will find information about route finding to Penwyllt and the location of facilities at the conference venue. You will find ResCon 2017 signs to guide you from the junction signposted to Penwyllt off the A4067 main road.

In addition, the conference programme is attached. A printed copy will be available in your delegate pack on registration. We trust that you will experience an interesting and varied programme of activities. The more formal information about the way cave rescue is run and supported will be balanced with fun events like the rescue stretcher race. There will also be opportunities to appreciate innovation in technical kit and techniques, with demonstrations above and below ground to cater for all. The SWCC real ale and cider bar on Friday and Saturday evenings and the Saturday evening event in Dan yr Ogof show cave will provide lively social opportunities to catch up with news from colleagues in other rescue teams.

Some final notes which may be of interest:

·        SWCC Penwyllt is relatively remote with no nearby commercial facilities and you will need to bring plenty of cash and your preferred breakfast food for the weekend. Breakfast rolls and beers will need to be separately purchased. All other food is included in the ticket prices and vouchers will be placed in your conference pack according to the type of tickets purchased.

·        The rescue race is a fun event and will test stretcher handling skills as much as speed and strength. Ideally your team will have 4-6 members on site to participate. Cotswold Outdoors have generously provided a prize for each participating team member.

·        If you have an innovation in kit developed in the last couple years, bring it along to describe to colleagues in other teams.

·        How do you package and transport cordless drills for rescue use? Do you have innovations for supplementing power if used for extended periods underground? Bring along an example for the drill workshop, both for placement of rigging hangers and for use with plug and feathers for splitting rock obstacles.

If you want to arrive early or stay longer, this can be arranged with the Duty Officer of SWCC. The conference covers only the Friday and Saturday night accommodation for those with a Full ticket. Similarly, there will be SWCC members around, some of whom will be more than willing to lead parties to explore the impressive Ogof Ffynnon Ddu cave, again this can be arranged via the SWCC DO, according to the access rules for OFD.

On arrival, you will find SMWCRT members waiting to welcome you at the registration desk at the main gate into SWCC Penwyllt. Here's hoping for fine weather to add that special touch to ResCon 2017!
